Futures contract month letters
Most futures contracts are listed for many different delivery months. These include oil, gold, and particularly the contracts settling against three-month interbank money. The naming conventions for these contracts are somewhat odd. Each delivery month has a 1-letter abbreviation. In futures contracts, each month is represented by a letter code. This is done alphabetically, but why does it start in F for January and why are some letters skipped? Futures contract month code. In futures contracts, the delivery month is reflected in the symbol name with a letter code. The letters for all 12 months in order are F, G, H, J, K, M, N, Q, U, V, X, Z. So a two year treasury future in CME might be "TUU5" where "TU" is a prefix symbol for any two year treasury future and U represents the delivery month, in this case the 3rd quarter month (September) and "5" is for 2015.
